Programme at a glace

Thriving as active learners

International School Groningen is an International Baccalaureate®(IB) World School, providing a supportive learning environment that equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in their future endeavours.

The IB Middle Years Programme is an internationally recognised programme offered in 100 countries, ensuring that students can continue their studies seamlessly if they move to another IB school outside of the Netherlands.

MYP is suitable for students ages 11-16. After completing MYP, students exhibiting a strong academic ability and a desire to continue their studies may be eligible to transfer to the 2-year Diploma Programme, a pre-university programme offered at ISG.

The IB learner profile

IB Middle Years Programme is designed to foster students who embody the IB learner profile. These characteristics include curiosity and a love of learning, a strong knowledge base, critical and creative thinking skills, effective communication abilities, strong principles and a sense of fairness, openness to new ideas and perspectives, compassion and care for others, a willingness to take calculated risks, a balanced approach to life that considers intellectual, physical, and emotional well-being, and a capacity for self-reflection.

A broad and balanced education

The Middle Years Programme curriculum covers the following subject groups:

Language acquisition

The study of additional languages (Dutch and French) provides students with the opportunity to develop insights into the features, processes and craft of language and the concept of culture, and to realise that there are diverse ways of living, viewing and behaving in the world.

Language and literature

Designed to help students develop critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills through the exploration of a wide range of texts. Students engage with various literary forms such as novels, poetry, drama, and non-fiction to understand diverse perspectives and cultures.

Individuals and societies

Incorporating disciplines (history, geography and economics) traditionally studied in the humanities, as well as disciplines in the social sciences.

Science

The sciences framework includes chemistry, physics and biology, to encourage students to investigate issues through research, observation and experimentation, working independently and collaboratively.

Mathematics

The mathematics framework encompasses number, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and promotes both inquiry and application, helping students to develop problem-solving techniques that transcend the discipline and are useful in the world beyond school.

Physical and health education

Physical and health education empowers students to understand and appreciate the value of being physically active, and develop the motivation for making healthy life choices.

Arts

Students develop through creating, performing and presenting arts (visual arts, theatre and music) in ways that engage and convey feelings, experiences and ideas.

Design

Students learn to apply practical and creative thinking skills to solve real-world problems. The course emphasises the design cycle, which includes inquiry, planning, creating, and evaluating solutions.

Beyond the classroom

The Middle Years Programme is designed to develop well-rounded individuals who:

Thrive as active learners

Taking ownership of their path to education.

Develop international understanding

Focusing on awareness and empathy.

Become compassionate thinkers

Learning to consider others' perspectives.

Prepare for a meaningful future

In which they can pursue their dreams.

Language of study

An English-first education with Dutch sensibility

The studies at ISG are conducted in English, requiring students to exhibit sufficient English literacy. Students with lower levels of English are of course welcome. English is offered at all levels to ensure all students can follow the learning. Trained staff and language support will soon get you on the road to success.

Dutch is taught as mother tongue and as a second language to help students communicate and feel oriented in Dutch society and culture.
