Welcome to Groningen
The northern capital that feels like home
Groningen is the capital of the Groningen province, the northernmost province of the Netherlands. It is a vibrant city, renowned for its large community of students and scholars, distinctive architecture and historic centre, all of which set it apart from other Dutch cities.
History of Groningen
A city forever young, steeped in history
Groningen's history stretches back over 2.000 years, evident in its charming mediaeval architecture. The imposing Martinitoren - a 13th-Century clock tower - dominates the skyline, while the Gothic Martinikerk church is often home to concerts and exhibitions. However, don’t be fooled by Groningen’s historic centre: the city is anything but stuck in the past! Its youthful vibe stems from its large student population, thanks to the prestigious University of Groningen, one of the oldest in the Netherlands. This dynamic mix of history and youthful energy fosters a vibrant cultural scene, with bustling cafes, lively music venues, and a calendar brimming with festivals and events.

Choices for getting around
Groningen actively promotes cycling, with a vast network of dedicated bicycle paths that make exploring a breeze on two wheels. The central train station connects Groningen with direct lines to cities such as Amsterdam and the Hague. For those in need of a quick lift, ride-sharing apps like Uber and Bolt also operate throughout the city.
